Lord of the Rings 4K Blu-ray set is it worth it?
If you already own the trilogy on other media formats and are a fan of the movies, then yes, you should buy the 4K version as well. Still, as with everything there are some problems if you really want to get into details. The film grain is removed and while it makes things look sharper you lose a bit of detail, it was probably done using some kind of digital noise reduction. The reason behind this is probably to make the movies look more digital and therefore closer to the Hobbit trilogy.
The great thing about this 4K version is the HDR treatment which you can really appreciate, especially when it comes to Rohan scenes, all the dark scenes are also much better and reveal a lot more to the viewer. The color temperature has also been changed, so don’t be surprised if things are a bit different than you remember. The Dolby Atmos surround track really opens up the sound, iconic scenes and battle scenes are better than ever.
But remember the price is a bit high on these movies, there is 9 discs, 3 for each movie this includes the theatrical release and the extended one spread on two discs. On Amazon the prices is $89.99 for the standard version and $149.99 for the giftset version.
I highly recommend this video for a detailed look before you decide to purchase the trilogy.
